The PlayBook tablet, which Research In Motion launched last spring, runs an operating system different from BlackBerry's current phones. It's based on QNX, an OS that also will serve as the backbone for the next generation of BlackBerrys, coming in late 2012.
However, the coming phone OS, BlackBerry 10, will be different than what's running on current PlayBooks. Until now, RIM hasn't said whether or not the PlayBook would be upgraded to BlackBerry 10, but today it's confirmed it: The PlayBook will get a BB10 upgrade.

Speaking to Tech Radar, RIM VP of Product Management Rob Orr said, "We've said publicly a number of times that our first BB10 handset will be available towards the end of 2012, and that's still firmly the case. "At some point after the launch we'll bring BB10 to our PlayBooks, yes."
The news comes shortly after RIM upgraded the PlayBook software to version 2.0. When the PlayBook launched, it was criticized for not offering native email or calendar apps -- the tablet needed to wirelessly pair with a BlackBerry phone in order to use those functions. Orr said many PlayBook owners have opted to upgrade to the new software, calling the up-take rate "astonishing." The company says more than 50% of PlayBook owners upgraded to 2.0 software on the first day of release.
