Thailand floods disrupt global supply chains

People living in increasingly worsening flood regions, like Thailand, will have to adapt out of self-interest

People are well aware of the Thailand floods. The WSJ is reporting that a consequence of such floods is that global supply chains are being disrupted. For profit firms have strong incentives to sign contracts with intermediate input suppliers who are not risky in terms of delivering promised products.

Mathew is an economics professor at UCLA and has written three books: Green Cities (Brookings Institution Press); Heroes and Cowards (Princeton University Press, jointly with Dora L. Costa); and in fall 2010, Climatopolis: How Our Cities Will Thrive in the Hotter World (Basic Books).

Recent posts

Why does this matter? Suppose that you are a political leader of Thailand and you gain if your nation's firms sign more international agreements to participate in global supply chains. If you know that damage from natural disasters endangers these contracts (as Multinational Western corporations seek out safer locations to purchase inputs from), then you have strong incentives to adapt to natural disasters.

This is the logic of Climatopolis! Self interest, not green ideology, guides the urge to adapt. I predict that Thailand's firms and governments will make a series of self protective investments to reduce flood risk exposure. What will be the net effect of these investments? How much flood risk can be offset? We will see.

Sony HomeShare review: A wireless music system for more than just your iPod (Digital Trends)

sony-homeshare-system

Read on for an overview of the Sony HomeShare system, then check out our full reviews of Sony HomeShare components:

At CES 2011, Sony announced it was moving away from its Altus line of wireless speakers in favor of a suite of products centered around what it called HomeShare. In a rather surprising move, Sony?s HomeShare bucks the company?s trend of going the proprietary route in hopes that others will eventually toe its line. Instead, HomeShare is a non-proprietary, DLNA-based system that can access and wirelessly share most music file types stored on a networked PC or NAS drive.

While the technology is also coming available through select Sony Blu-Ray disc players, micro systems and TVs, HomeShare made its debut through five currently available network music products (and now a sixth, forthcoming speaker which was just recently announced at CEDIA 2011). You?ve got the NAC-SV10i iPod/iPhone dock, the NAS-SV20i iPod/iPhone speaker dock, the CMT-MX700Ni micro system, the SA-NS300 wireless network speaker and SA-NS400 wireless network speaker. Sony also recently introduced the RMN-U1 universal touch-screen remote control which, as it happens, integrates nicely with HomeShare to control any compatible devices in the home.

Though any of these devices can be used on their own, the real fun seems to be centered around integration. Perhaps that?s why Sony sent us a trio of HomeShare devices to evaluate together. But,to keep things simple, we decided to evaluate each of the components individually and publish separate reviews for the NAC-SV10i iPod/iPhone dock, SA-NS300 wireless network speaker and RMN-U1 universal touch-screen remote.

It comes down to this: Each of the products had their positive and not-so-positive points. Our biggest challenge was consistent network connectivity. Of the three devices we tested, the RMN-U1 was the most consistently easy to use. Unlike the network speaker and iPod/iPhone dock, it never seemed to have trouble communicating through our network (which was not occupied with any other tasks or accessed by any other machines during our tests, by the way). Also, the remote is definitely the ideal control interface for the HomeShare product family. The only real problem we see is that the RMN-U1?s $300 asking price makes attaining an easy to use wireless music system from Sony a pricier proposition. Of course, considering how much more the system can do than some similarly priced AirPlay speaker systems, maybe this product family is more competitively priced than we first thought.

Used individually, each of the three HomeShare devices we tested were able to provide some useful functions, albeit with some quirks here and there. Yet, it was when the three individuals were brought together as a team that a useful, comprehensive wireless system was born. We like most things modular, but in this case we?re going to say that the whole was definitely greater than the sum of its parts. Though individually rated in each review, we?d give the entire HomeShare system a respectable 8.0 rating.

'X Factor' host: Simon Cowell's 'just so childish'

Simon Cowell is a lot of things. Blunt. Straightforward. British. But is he, as one of his fellow "X Factor" stars claim, childish in his judging methods?

We caught up with Cowell, Paula Abdul, Steve Jones, Nicole Scherzinger and L.A. Reid after last night's "X Factor" elimination show, and someone had some pretty harsh words in regard to Simon's attitude. Of course, the master of mean had some harsh thoughts of his own to let loose...

MORE: Who's Off The X Factor Already?!

"Simon is the worst!" host Jones exclaims. "For such an intelligent and successful man he can be just so childish. Whenever L.A. was trying to speak, Simon would go like this to the crowd [raises arms] so they would drown him out basically. So they just would cheer all over his speech. It's so childish, yet so yummy."

Either he means the drama is yummy, or someone has a man-crush on Simon! But you know who isn't Simon's No. 1 fan right now? Scherzinger. Especially after last night when it seemed like they were butting heads.

Huge 'X-Factor' episode cuts 5 acts

"I have no idea what her problem was tonight, seriously," Cowell tells us. "Somebody was a little bit grumpy." And when we brought up the bad blood to the former Pussycat Doll, she just laughed it off. "I am pretty tough. I know how to handle [Simon] but sometimes I've just got to bite back," she says. "I can't help it, especially when he talks about me not connecting with my contestant when I know how hard I've worked with them and the time I've spent."

Speaking of those contestants, Simon revealed that he had a soft spot for Melanie, and even admitted to us that (gasp!) he was wrong. "Judging by the reaction tonight and the point that she proved, she is a class act, and I like the fact that she bounced back and she proved a point. And I was happy to admit I was wrong," he says. We don't understand a world in which Simon admits he made a mistake. Is the sky still up?

GPS and Facebook help nab identity thief with 300,000 victims (Yahoo! News)

A long-time cyber criminal is now behind bars

A seasoned identity thief in Los Angeles was brought to justice with the help of social networking and the United States Postal Service. 40-year-old Robert Delgado was on parole for a previous identity theft case when investigators began tracking his activities earlier this year, and he will now spend at least the next 30 years in prison.

A U.S. Postal Inspector first began investigating Delgado after a customer came forth with evidence that someone was opening fraudulent accounts in his name, causing his mail to be suspended. After some internet sleuthing ? which included obtaining Delgado's mobile phone number via an unsecured Facebook page ? the Postal Service was able to track the criminal's movements via GPS and monitor what retailers he was visiting.

Investigators discovered that Delgado was making fraudulent purchases all over town, and were able to secure a search warrant for his residence. During the raid, identity information of over 300,000 was found on the suspect's computer. Detectives still aren't sure where he obtained such a wealth of personal data, but they are working to determine its origin.

Delgado subsequently plead guilty and was sentenced to his prison term on October 24. In addition to being 70 by the time he walks free, he will receive an added 5 years of strict supervision following his prison term.

Obama's student loan debt-relief plan: Too good to be true? (The Christian Science Monitor)

Washington ? President Obama on Wednesday is launching a new plan to lower the cost of paying back student loans for millions of borrowers ? the latest installment in his bid to move a jobs agenda that bypasses a gridlocked Congress.

At nearly $1 trillion, federal and private student loans now exceed US credit-card debt, posing a formidable repayment burden for many borrowers at a time of near-double digit unemployment.

The plan, to be implemented by executive authority alone, allows some 1.6 million students to cap their loan payments at 10 percent of their discretionary income starting in 2012. It also forgives the balance of student loans after 20 years of payments. Current law allows students to limit loan payments to 15 percent of income, forgiving debt after 25 years of payments, though few students are aware of this option

RECOMMENDED: Unemployment, Inc.: Six reasons why America can't create jobs

In a related move, the US Department of Education, which now administers all federal education loans, is giving borrowers the option of consolidating federal and private loans at reduced rates.

?College graduates are entering one of the toughest job markets in recent memory, and we have a way to help them save money by consolidating their debt and capping their loan payments,? said Education Secretary Arne Duncan on a conference call with reporters on Tuesday. ?And we can do it at no cost to the taxpayer.?

Even before the official rollout of the program at a rally in Denver, House Republicans challenged how the president could move forward without congressional approval.

RECOMMENDED: Tired of student loans? These schools will leave you with little debt.

"The president is about to announce a major change in the program that we have not yet acted on in the Congress,? said Rep. Virginia Foxx (R) of North Carolina, who chaired an oversight hearing on Tuesday. ?What authority does the department have??

?I can?t answer that question,? said witness James Runcie, the Education Department?s federal student aid chief operating officer. ?Whatever we?re told to do in terms of implementation and execution, we?ll optimize and do what?s in the best interest of borrowers and students.?

Part of the answer appears to be a move made by the Democrat-controlled Congress in March 2010. It ended taxpayer subsidies to private banks for student loans, meaning that the Education Department alone was responsible for handing out government money for such loans. That means the $60 billion set to go to private banks for student loans during the next 10 years is now tabbed for the Education Department.

RECOMMENDED: Graduated? Seven job tips for college graduates.

Congress directed the Education Department to use that savings to expand Pell grants for low-and moderate income students to attend college. But many House Republicans who still oppose the move they say it has made the Department of Education one of the largest banks in the nation, largely unaccountable to Congress.

?This is another example of the Obama administration making changes to federal education policy behind closed doors,? said GOP committee spokeswoman Alexandra Sollberger in an e-mail. ?We are disappointed that the Department of Education chose not to engage committee members prior to announcing this plan to the press.?

Republican critics also note that the Education Department charges 6.8 percent for loans that cost much less, ?creating a pretty big slush fund for the government,? said Rep. John Kline (R) of Minnesota, who chairs the House Education and Workforce Committee, at Tuesday?s hearing.

He tabbed federal borrowing for the program ?at less than 1 percent? ? yielding a large profit.

Education Department officials dispute that view. ?Right now Direct Loans reduce the deficit,? says Education Department spokeswoman Jane Glickman. ?I wouldn?t call it slush.?

The 10-year interest rate is dictated to the department by the White House's Office of Management and Budget (OMB), added Ms. Glickman in an e-mail. ?In yesterday?s market, the 10-year rate was between 2 and 2.5. In the OMB projections, it is more like 3 for 2011.

The burden of some $1 trillion in outstanding student loans ? up from $500 billion just five years ago ? is a hot issue in the Occupy Wall Street protests. Students struggling with loans they can?t afford to repay blame the federal government for stripping away consumer protections

?Every fundamental consumer protection has been specifically removed by our Congress for student loans,? says Alan Collinge at the Zuccotti Park protest site in New York on Sunday.

?It?s led to horrible outcomes for the borrowers,? he adds. ?The political will to crack down doesn?t exist.?

President Obama said in a statement on Tuesday: ?Steps like these won?t take the place of the bold action we need from Congress to boost our economy and create jobs, but they will make a difference."

Unlike mortgage or credit-card debt, student loans can?t be eliminated through bankruptcy proceedings. With a sputtering economy, the investment in college doesn?t always pay off for students. In an interview on NBC?s ?Meet the Press" on Sunday, GOP presidential hopeful Ron Paul called federal student loans a ?failed program,? because it enabled colleges and universities to inflate costs.

RECOMMENDED: Tired of student loans? These schools will leave you with little debt.

'Junk DNA' defines differences between humans and chimps

Research characterizes important genetic variation between the species

For years, scientists believed the vast phenotypic differences between humans and chimpanzees would be easily explained the two species must have significantly different genetic makeups. However, when their genomes were later sequenced, researchers were surprised to learn that the DNA sequences of human and chimpanzee genes are nearly identical. What then is responsible for the many morphological and behavioral differences between the two species? Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology have now determined that the insertion and deletion of large pieces of DNA near genes are highly variable between humans and chimpanzees and may account for major differences between the two species.

The research team lead by Georgia Tech Professor of Biology John McDonald has verified that while the DNA sequence of genes between humans and chimpanzees is nearly identical, there are large genomic "gaps" in areas adjacent to genes that can affect the extent to which genes are "turned on" and "turned off." The research shows that these genomic "gaps" between the two species are predominantly due to the insertion or deletion (INDEL) of viral-like sequences called retrotransposons that are known to comprise about half of the genomes of both species. The findings are reported in the most recent issue of the online, open-access journal Mobile DNA.

"These genetic gaps have primarily been caused by the activity of retroviral-like transposable element sequences," said McDonald. "Transposable elements were once considered 'junk DNA' with little or no function. Now it appears that they may be one of the major reasons why we are so different from chimpanzees."

McDonald's research team, comprised of graduate students Nalini Polavarapu, Gaurav Arora and Vinay Mittal, examined the genomic gaps in both species and determined that they are significantly correlated with differences in gene expression reported previously by researchers at the Max Plank Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Germany.

"Our findings are generally consistent with the notion that the morphological and behavioral differences between humans and chimpanzees are predominately due to differences in the regulation of genes rather than to differences in the sequence of the genes themselves," said McDonald.

The current analysis of the genetic differences between humans and chimpanzees was motivated by the group's previously published findings (2009) that the higher propensity for cancer in humans vs. chimpanzees may have been a by-product of selection for increased brain size in humans.

Sergio Garcia wins Castello Masters by 11 strokes

(AP) ? Sergio Garcia won his first title in almost three years on Sunday, dominating for the third straight day at the Castello Masters while earning an 11-stroke victory that matched the third-largest margin of victory in European Tour history.

The 31-year-old Garcia, playing on a course where he was club champion at the age of 12, shot an 8-under 63 in the final round to finish at 27-under 257.

"That was for Seve," Garcia said, referring to golfing great Seve Ballesteros, who died of brain cancer in May.

Garcia had shot his best ever back-to-back rounds of 63 and 64 to lead the field since Friday, and he did not let up on the final day, recording nine birdies and just his fourth bogey in the event.

"It's hard to say that you expect to fire like I did, but I was feeling good and I've been improving all year," Garcia said.

"At the beginning of the week there's always a little extra pressure because you want to do well in front of your home fans and on your home course. But I felt really good and it showed."

Fellow Spaniard Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano finished a distant second, and Alexander Noren was third.

Once ranked No. 2, Garcia had dropped outside the top 75 after near-misses at the 2007 British Open at Carnoustie and 2008 PGA Championship at Oakland Hills.

He has now returned to the top 35 with his second win at the Club de Campo del Mediterraneo, capping his improved season that includes top-12 finishes in the last three majors.

"I would like to thank not only my family and friends, but also my sponsors, everyone that's around me, for supporting me through two tough years," Garcia said. "They have stuck with me and believed in me and I'm happy to be able to pay them back with this victory."

RolePlayGateway?

Image

I'm thinking about starting a roleplay based in the chrono universe, but before I can proceed, I'd like to establish a support base for such a project, all those interested should leave a comment expressing support for chrono trigger and or chrono cross. The roleplay will feature multiple settings and alternate timelines and a new one(2012). Depending on what time line you choose, may effect which classes you will have access to(makes sense). I also need a co-gm and writers, to help organize and frame some of foundation for the story. The thing I was to convey most with the story is a sense of continuity and purpose. I'm open to suggestions and ideas and If I like it enough it will be amended into the story, so don't be afraid to leave feedback.

There will be a few class options I have in mind for characters to choose that are based off pre-existing models.

Image

Classes

Magus- There are those who spend their lives poring over ancient tomes and texts, unlocking the power of magic, and there are those who spend their time perfecting the use of individual weapons, becoming masters without equal. The magus is at once a student of both philosophies, blending magical ability and martial prowess into something entirely unique, a discipline in which both spell and steel are used to devastating effect. As he grows in power, the magus unlocks powerful forms of arcana that allow him to merge his talents further, and at the pinnacle of his art, the magus becomes a blur of steel and magic, a force that few foes would dare to stand against.
Weapons that can be used with this class: Scythe, Spear, Bow, Staff

Adventurer -A jack of all trades and a master of none, you are an Adventurer! Adventurers can adapt to many situations with great ease. A great starting class if you're not sure how you want to specialize.Though they lack any specific skills or strengths, this serves as their only real weakness, as otherwise Adventurers are well-rounded in all areas of combat. They have access to some light and dark magic but they'll never be considered experts in any trade. This class is inspired by Toma the Adventurer.
Weapons available to this class: All

Swordmaster(chrono's class)- Swift and deadly, Swordmasters or Master Swordsmen silently roam the earth in search of the strongest warriors to test their skills against. These sword masters make use of offensive magic to aid them in battle and augment their already astounding power. While these warriors may be quiet out of battle, the access to the spellblade ability makes them ferocious and energetic fighters in battle. In fact, they have been known to swiftly and mercilessly shred their foes before their enemies even aknowledge that their defense has been breached. However, most of the time these agile warriors are peaceful and maintain their composure. Indeed, when out of battle, it is quite rare for these warriors to get angered, and they are most often seen in a state of peace and tranquility. These warriors will often meditate to harness the energy within their body and bring their wild mind to a calm state of equilibrium. By focusing these energies, Iron Blademasters are able to unleash blasts of power from their sword and fists. Chrono and Slash are examples of featured Swordsmasters.
Weapons available to this class: Fist, Katana, Sword, dual swords.

Genius- You are the Gear Enchanter, a cunning warrior skilled with weapons, offensive elemental magic, and mechanics. By fusing magic and engineering together Gear Enchanters are able to construct powerful enchanted machines capable of wreaking havoc on all their opponents. Magical weapons, cannons, and vehicles are absolutely no trouble for them to build, and they give Gear Enchanters a decided advantage in every battle they fight. By constructing magical airships and tanks, they can quickly move thousands of people across vast stretches of land and also augment both their defensive and offensive capabilities. Geniuses are essential centerpieces for any team.
Weapons available to this class: Guns, Staff, Scythe, knives, whips.

Dragoons- The Dragon Knight is portrayed as a skilled warrior class, usually capable of wearing heavy armor. Its weapons of choice are spears and lances, which it frequently utilizes in an airborne attack. The Dragon Knight signature attack is a long-distance leap into the air. From above, the Dragon Knight thrusts downward with its spearpoint, skewering its foes from above, and causing approximately twice as much damage as a normal horizontal attack. In addition, its speed and skill at handling such potentially unwieldy weaponry allows an experience Dragon Knight to strike multiple times during one combat round.
Weapons available to this class: Spears, Fist, Katana.

Knights- Powerful and noble warriors, Paladins are both masters of weapons and defensive magic. By imbuing their weapons with light magic, War Paladins can easily and effortlessly vanquish any evil or undead foes. Additionally, they excel at defensive spells which they use to enhance the protective power of their shields. The magic of spellcasters has little affect on War Paladins because of the defensive capabilities of their magical shields. These shields also help protect them against any physical attacks, making War Paladins almost impossible to injure. On top of that, they can use their magic to heal themselves or their allies. The combination of high physical power and high defensive magic make War Paladins one of the top classes. Their only downside is that that they can sometimes lack stealth and can be quite slow; however, the strongest War Paladins have increased their agility enough so that it is not a problem in battle. Glenn and Cyrus are well known Paladin Knight.
Weapons available to this class: Bows, Spears, Swords, dual swords, knives.

Royal- A class whose key distinction is belonging to that of high nobility, they have access to the exclusively elusive celestia magic, widely considered to be the most powerful form of magic in existence. They can be considered to be the proper counterpart of the Magus. Marle and Queen Zeal are examples of Royal's.

Weapons: Swords, Bows, knives, staff.

Monster Tamer- Monster Tamers are a group of people who, instead of gaining innate power, learn to bind the souls of monstrous beings and command them to fight in the Tamer's stead. They are often feared by most of the smarter beings among these Monsters, who don't relish the prospect of being an attack dog on a leash for mortal Tamers.

Monster Tamers are most often defined by the Monsters they have at their command. Some choose to have a varied and even haphazard collection, some choose to focus on Monsters of a particular type or subtype, and some choose to go along other themes, such as Monsters with particular schools of spell-like abilities or tough bruisers.

Weapons available to this class: Whips, Guns, bow, spears.

Sentinel- A sentinel can be thought of as a sort of elite policing force whose job it is to watch over time, they are very knowledgeable and well versed in time space theory, established in the future time lines, they carry out the duty of eradicating threats to the space time continuum such as Lavos, capable spell casters and fighters; their ability to use synthesized or fusion magic in the form of dual casting makes them versatile and deadly combatants, however they have a tendency to not be team players, preferring to opt as lone wolves. They can be considered a cross between the Genius and Swordsmaster class. A very powerful and well rounded class.
Weapons available to this class: Gun, Katana, Fist, Knives, Spears, Scythe.

Races

Zeal-A race close to humans in physiology, however they possess a natural gift for magic, believed to be the ancestors of modern humans. Magus and Schala are members of the Zeal race.
Humans- No explanation necessary
Dragovian- believed to have perished some thousands of years in the B.C era , proof of their lineage exists in the form of the Dragovians. A humanoid race of people whose ancestors were reptilians, they excel naturally as Dragon Knights.
Demihumans- Lynx, these are merely human-like
Robot/Androids- Robots possess great constitutions, intelligence, as well as some , they are considered the tanks of all races.
Mystics/Mutants- Originating from the Kingdom of Zeal in Chrono Trigger. Created by powerful Zeal mages as experiments, most Fiends became servants, guards, and sometimes even jesters to their Enlightened Masters Inherently magical beings, some Fiends possess the ability to cast magical spells. Some Fiends are immortal, while others live ordinary lifespans. In addition to this, Fiends carry significant differences physiologically, as there are many different species or sub-races such as Imps, Demons, and Naga. Despite these differences, Fiends are like in that they share the same origin. Flea and Slash are examples of well-known Mystics.

Hundreds dead as quake shakes eastern Turkey

More than 200 people were killed in the 7.2 magnitude quake that devastated parts of eastern Turkey, Interior Minister Idris Naim Sahin told reporters early Monday.

Overseeing emergency operations in Ercis, one the worst hit towns, Sahin said 117 people were confirmed dead in Ercis and 100 in Van city, the provincial capital. A total of 1,090 people were known to have been injured by the quake Sunday afternoon, he said. Officials say hundreds of people remained unaccounted for and rescue teams were working through the night looking for survivors beneath the rubble.

As a cold night fell, survivors and emergency workers battled to pull hundreds of people believed to be buried under debris in Van and Ercis, where a student dormitory collapsed.

Residents in Van joined in a frantic search, using hands and shovels and working under floodlights and flashlights, hearing voices of people buried alive calling from under mounds of broken concrete in pitch darkness and freezing temperatures.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan traveled by helicopter to the area to see firsthand the scale of Turkey's worst earthquake in a decade.

Tens of thousands fled into the streets running, screaming or trying to reach relatives on cell phones as apartment and office buildings cracked or collapsed. As the full extent of the damage became clear, survivors dug in with shovels or even their bare hands, desperately trying to rescue the trapped and the injured.

"My wife and child are inside! My 4-month-old baby is inside!" CNN-Turk television showed one young man sobbing outside a collapsed building in Van, the provincial capital.

Highways in the area caved in and Van's airport was damaged, forcing flights to be diverted.

TRT television reported that 60 people were killed and 150 injured in Ercis, 25 others died in Van and four people, including a child, died in the nearby province of Bitlis. It said at least nine people were pulled out of debris alive.

Up to 80 buildings collapsed in Ercis, including a dormitory, and 10 buildings collapsed in Van, the Turkish Red Crescent said. Some highways also caved in.

Kandilli Observatory general manager Mustafa Erdik told a news conference he estimated hundreds of lives had been lost. "It could be 500 or 1,000," he added. He said he based his estimate on the magnitude of the earthquake, the strongest since 1999, and the quality of construction.

Authorities advised people to stay away from any damaged homes, warning they could collapse in the aftershocks. U.S. scientists recorded over 100 aftershocks in eastern Turkey within ten hours of the quake, including one with a magnitude of 6.0.

Residents in Van and Ercis lit camp fires, preparing to spend the night outdoors, after hundreds were treated for injuries. Others fled seeking shelter with relatives in nearby villages.

"There are so many dead ... there is too much destruction," Ercis Mayor Zulfikar Arapoglu told NTV. "We need urgent aid. We need medics."

Rescue efforts went deep into the night under generator-powered floodlights. Workers tied steel rods around large concrete slabs in Van, then lifted them with heavy machinery.

Residents sobbed outside the ruins of one flattened eight-story building, hoping that missing relatives would be found. Witnesses said eight people were pulled from the rubble, but frequent aftershocks hampered search efforts. By late evening, some joy emerged as a ninth, a teenage girl, was pulled out alive.

Around 1,275 rescue teams from 38 provinces were being sent to the region, officials said, and troops were also assisting search-and-rescue efforts.

In Ercis, heavy machinery stopped working and people were ordered to keep silent as rescuers tried to listen for possible survivors inside a seven-story building housing 28 families, NTV reported.

Some inmates escaped a prison in Van after one of its walls collapsed. TRT television said around 150 inmates had fled, but a prison official said the number was much smaller and many later returned.

Many buildings also collapsed in the district of Celebibag, near Ercis, including student dormitories, hotels and gas stations.

"There are many people under the rubble," Veysel Keser, the mayor of Celebibag, told NTV. "People are in agony, we can hear their screams for help."

Nazmi Gur, a legislator from Van, said his nephew's funeral ceremony was cut short due to the quake and he rushed back to help.

"We managed to rescue a few people, but I saw at least five bodies," Gur told The Associated Press."It was such a powerful temblor. It lasted for such a long time,"

"But now we have no electricity, there is no heating, everyone is outside in the cold," he added.

Authorities had no information yet on remote villages but the governor was touring the region by helicopter and the government sent in tents, field kitchens and blankets.

The earthquake also shook buildings in neighboring Armenia and Iran.

In the Armenian capital of Yerevan, 100 miles (160 kilometers) from Ercis, people rushed into the streets in fear but no damage or injuries were reported. Armenia was the site of a devastating earthquake in 1988 that killed 25,000 people.

Sunday's quake caused panic in several Iranian towns close to the Turkish border and caused cracks in buildings in the city of Chaldoran, Iranian state TV reported.

Leaders around the world conveyed their condolences and offered assistance.

"We stand shoulder to shoulder with our Turkish ally in this difficult time, and are ready to assist," President Barack Obama said.

Israeli President Shimon Peres telephoned Turkish President Abdullah Gul to offer assistance.

"Israel shares in your sorrow," Peres said in a statement. "Israel is ready to render any assistance that may be required anywhere in Turkey, at any time."

The offer came despite a rift in relations following an 2010 Israeli navy raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla that left nine Turks dead. Greece, which has a deep dispute with Turkey over the divided island of Cyprus, also offered to send in a special earthquake rescue team.

Turkey lies in one of the world's most active seismic zones and is crossed by numerous fault lines. In 1999, two earthquakes with a magnitude of more than 7 struck northwestern Turkey, killing about 18,000 people.

More recently, a 6.0-magnitude quake in March 2010 killed 51 people in eastern Turkey, while in 2003, a 6.4-magnitude earthquake killed 177 people in the southeastern city of Bingol.

Istanbul, the country's largest city with more than 12 million people, lies in northwestern Turkey near a major fault line. Experts have warned that overcrowding and shoddy construction in Istanbul could kill tens of thousands if a major earthquake struck.

MUMBAI, India (AP) ? More than 200 Indian girls whose names mean "unwanted" in Hindi have chosen new names for a fresh start in life.

A central Indian district held a renaming ceremony Saturday that it hopes will give the girls new dignity and help fight widespread gender discrimination that gives India a skewed gender ratio, with far more boys than girls.

The 285 girls ? wearing their best outfits with barrettes, braids and bows in their hair ? lined up to receive certificates with their new names along with small flower bouquets from Satara district officials in Maharashtra state.

In shedding names like "Nakusa" or "Nakushi," which mean "unwanted" in Hindi, some girls chose to name themselves after Bollywood stars such as "Aishwarya" or Hindu goddesses like "Savitri." Some just wanted traditional names with happier meanings, such as "Vaishali," or "prosperous, beautiful and good."

"Now in school, my classmates and friends will be calling me this new name, and that makes me very happy," said a 15-year-old girl who had been named Nakusa by a grandfather disappointed by her birth. She chose the new name "Ashmita," which means "very tough" or "rock hard" in Hindi.

The plight of girls in India came to a focus after this year's census showed the nation's sex ratio had dropped over the past decade from 927 girls for every 1,000 boys under the age of 6 to 914.

Maharashtra state's ratio is well below that, with just 883 girls for every 1,000 boys ? down from 913 a decade ago. In the district of Satara, it is even lower, at 881.

Such ratios are the result of abortions of female fetuses, or just sheer neglect leading to a higher death rate among girls. The problem is so serious in India that hospitals are legally banned from revealing the gender of an unborn fetus in order to prevent sex-selective abortions, though evidence suggests the information gets out.

Part of the reason Indians favor sons is the enormous expense of marrying off girls. Families often go into debt arranging marriages and paying for elaborate dowries. A boy, on the other hand, will one day bring home a bride and dowry. Hindu custom also dictates that only sons can light their parents' funeral pyres.

Over the years, and again now, efforts have been made to fight the discrimination.

"Nakusa is a very negative name as far as female discrimination is concerned," said Satara district health officer Dr. Bhagwan Pawar, who came up with the idea for the renaming ceremony.

Other incentives, announced by federal or state governments every few years, include free meals and free education to encourage people to take care of their girls, and even cash bonuses for families with girls who graduate from high school.

Activists say the name "unwanted," which is widely given to girls across India, gives them the feeling they are worthless and a burden.

"When the child thinks about it, you know, 'My mom, my dad, and all my relatives and society call me unwanted,' she will feel very bad and depressed," said Sudha Kankaria of the organization Save the Girl Child. But giving these girls new names is only the beginning, she said.

"We have to take care of the girls, their education and even financial and social security, or again the cycle is going to repeat," she said.

The Gadget Show builds an FPS simulator that shoots back (video)

Racing simulators are ten a penny, but the closest an FPS player will get to an immersive experience is buying some branded peripherals. Armed with a pre-release level of Battlefield 3, The Gadget Show enlisted a team of design experts to transform a Birmingham studio into an FPS simulator costing £500,000 ($650,000). A four by nine meter video dome surrounds the player as they stand on an omni-directional treadmill that lets you walk wherever you want to go. Ten infra-red motion tracking cameras and a sensor on your gun enables the picture to follow where you point it and a Kinect hack controls your jumping and crouching. The fun doesn't stop there -- 12 paintball markers mean that every time you get shot in the game, you'll feel it. The show airs in the UK on October 24th at 8:00pm, Channel 5. We've got a behind the scenes gallery below (supplied by those lovely people from the show) as well as PR and a trailer after the break.

Prosecution wrapping up in trial of Jackson doctor (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? The trial of the doctor charged in Michael Jackson's death resumed Wednesday after days of delay, with jurors hearing from a leading expert on the powerful anesthetic propofol that authorities say killed the King of Pop.

Dr. Steven Shafer's early testimony focused on his lengthy credentials, studies he has helped create, and his work crafting guidelines and warnings that are included with every bottle of propofol.

Prosecutors claim Dr. Conrad Murray ignored those warnings by giving Jackson the anesthetic in the bedroom of his rented mansion.

Shafer is expected to introduce a video demonstration that shows the proper procedures for administering propofol in a hospital setting, where the drug is supposed to be used.

Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor ruled that portions of the video, which depicts the setup of an operating room and what medical personnel are supposed to do if a patient's heart stops, could be shown to jurors.

Before the video was played, Shafer told jurors he is not charging for his work on the Jackson case, in part because he wants to restore public confidence in the medication and doctors.

"I am asked every day in the operating room, `Are you going to give me the drug that killed Michael Jackson,'" Shafer said. "This is a fear that patients do not need to have."

Shafer, who is a researcher and a practicing anesthesiologist, is the prosecution's final witness in its case against Murray, who has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter. He used a bottle of propofol he brought to court to demonstrate how a syringe can be used to obtain the drug from its glass vial.

Pastor canceled testimony Tuesday to give defense attorneys time to research new test results conducted by coroner's officials on the level of the sedative lorazepam in Jackson's body.

Murray's attorneys have claimed lorazepam levels in the singer's stomach contents suggested he may have taken several pills without his doctor's knowledge in the hours before his death.

Murray has acknowledged giving Jackson doses of propofol in the pop superstar's bedroom as a sleep aid. However, his attorneys have said that the amount of propofol given to Jackson on the day he died was too small to cause his sudden death at age 50.

Deputy District Attorney David Walgren gas said the new results from the coroner's office show that levels of lorazepam in Jackson's body were lower than the defense claimed and were inconsistent with the theory that Murray's attorneys had presented to jurors.

Lead defense attorney Ed Chernoff said he was seeking additional testing from an independent lab to confirm or disprove the coroner's results, but it would take several days for the defense to get the answers it needs.

Walgren agreed that he would not raise the issue of the new tests until after the defense team presents its case.

Chernoff complained about the video on propofol procedures that will be shown to jurors. "This is a dramatization," he said. "The information can be described."

The video simulates an operating room environment and includes segments in which various medical and life-saving equipment present in the room are described in detail.

"This is designed to assist the jury to better understand the testimony of Dr. Shafer," Walgren said.

Pastor said the video was highly relevant, but asked prosecutors to edit out certain portions before playing it in court.

Murray's attorneys will begin calling witnesses Friday. They plan to call 15 witnesses, including police detectives, character witnesses and Randy Phillips, the head of AEG Live, the promoter of Jackson's planned series of comeback concerts.

Chernoff said many of the witnesses will be brief and the defense should rest its case by Wednesday.

Murray's attorneys are also going to call one of Shafer's colleagues, Dr. Paul White, as an expert to try to counter the prosecution's case.

Prosecution witnesses have repeatedly faulted Murray for his care of Jackson, noting that his use of propofol as a sleep aid was outside the drug's intended use. They have also faulted Murray for not calling 911 sooner, for botching resuscitation efforts and for lying to paramedics and emergency room doctors about the drugs he had given Jackson.

Sarkozy and Bruni feel ?deep joy? over new baby

French President Nicolas Sarkozy said on Thursday he and first lady Carla Bruni were deeply happy over their baby daughter, the first official confirmation of the birth, but added he will leave it to his wife to reveal the girl's name.

Speaking to reporters during a trip to the town of Mayenne in northwestern France, following two visits to see his wife and baby, Sarkozy said they wanted to keep the arrival of their first child together a private matter.

"All of you who are parents can understand the very deep joy that Carla and I feel. Each one of you can also understand that it's an even deeper joy because it is private," he said.

"We have been lucky to have a very happy event take place," he said. "I will just keep to these few brief words to say to you that they are doing very well."

Updated 2 minutes ago 10/20/2011 2:41:00 PM +00:00 Deposed Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi has been killed, the Libyan prime minister confirmed Thursday, following news of his capture and reports of his death.

    5. Sarkozy and Bruni feel ?deep joy? over new baby

Sarkozy and his office have kept silent throughout Bruni's pregnancy, despite high interest in what is the first baby ever born to a French presidential couple in office, with Sarkozy intent on repairing an image many see as too brash and informal.

Late Wednesday evening, the French media reported that France's first lady Carla Bruni had given birth to a baby girl.

Europe 1 radio and BFM television said Bruni gave birth at around 8 p.m. local time after being admitted earlier in the day to the La Muette maternity clinic in central Paris.

Late Wednesday, President Sarkozy returned from a brief trip to Frankfurt and entered the clinic. Sarkozy was in Frankfurt for talks with his German counterpart Angela Merkel and EU officials on Franco-German efforts to put together a plan to stem the euro zone debt crisis.

Story: Two good! Twins give birth less than an hour apart

Sarkozy may have raised eyebrows among family-minded voters, however, for jumping on a plane to Frankfurt while Bruni was in labor, returning later in the evening and briefly visiting her and the baby in the maternity clinic.

He returned on Thursday morning, but for less than an hour and did not appear to have flowers or other gifts.

Defence Minister Gerard Longuet told Tele Sarkozy was "very happy" and this could only be a good thing for both the ruling conservatives and the country.

Boost his popularity ratings?
France has been on tenterhooks for weeks over the impending birth, which could give Sarkozy's image a welcome boost just over six months before a presidential election opinion polls show he could lose to Socialist challenger Francois Hollande.

Sarkozy's popularity ratings have been stuck at just above 30 percent for months, despite his leadership on issues like the Libyan crisis, with many French angry at economic gloom and resentful of a leadership style many see as impulsive and brash.

An opinion poll by CSA published on Wednesday, the first since Hollande was picked at the weekend to run for the left in next April's presidential election, found Hollande could beat Sarkozy by 62 percent to 38 percent if the two faced off in a second-round runoff vote.

First lady: I hope I don?t mess my daughters up

The poll gave Hollande 35 percent support for the first-round vote in April against 25 percent for Sarkozy.

A separate poll by Harris Interactive found that Sarkozy was still the best-placed candidate to run for the ruling UMP party, backed by 47 percent of respondents for a hypothetical UMP primary versus 19 percent for Foreign Minister Alain Juppe and 12 percent for Prime Minister Francois Fillon.

His daughter's birth coincides with one of the most crucial weeks of Sarkozy's four-year presidency as he battles to hammer out a plan with Germany to stem the euro zone's debt crisis before a self-imposed deadline on Sunday.

Pollsters say that as well as his handling of the euro crisis, the image Sarkozy projects to voters in the months ahead will be crucial for his reelection prospects next April.

Many in France found his high-speed courtship of Bruni, a singer-songwriter and former model, distasteful coming so soon after his divorce from his second wife, Cecilia, but Sarkozy kept carefully quiet about Bruni's pregnancy.

Media coverage has been incessant, however, a novelty in France, where a president's private life is usually kept private.

Sarkozy has three children from his two previous marriages, while Italian-born Bruni has a son from a former relationship.

Joey Quits: Hotel Worker Tells Story Behind Viral Resignation Video

Like almost anyone who's ever held down a job, Joey DeFrancesco harbored dreams of one day quitting work in spectacular fashion.

The way 23-year-old DeFrancesco tells it, he worked a job he didn?t care for at a hotel in Providence, R.I., for more than three years. He often thought about leaving. In his own workplace fantasy, DeFrancesco would march right up to his boss with a letter of resignation. Upon handing it over, a brass band would explode into boisterous song. Then DeFrancesco would march out of the hotel in triumph, waving to his admirers.

The difference between DeFrancesco and the rest of us is that he actually carried out his fantasy.

"I hated them, and they hated me," DeFrancesco tells HuffPost, speaking of management at the Renaissance Providence Hotel, where he worked in room service. "It was this big drawn-out war we were having with management ... I knew I had to get one last shot at them."

A video posted online of DeFrancesco's resignation in late August has gone viral. In the video, DeFrancesco shows up at the hotel with the What Cheer? Brigade, a 19-piece brass band for which he plays trumpet.

"I've worked in this hotel ... for three and a half years," DeFrancesco says at the start of the video. "I'm going to go and quit right now with the help of my bandmates."

DeFrancesco then waves the group through what appears to be a back door, and they wait giddily in the hallway for DeFrancesco's boss to appear. When he arrives to see unwelcome guests, the boss shouts, "All of you out, now!"

DeFrancesco, clearly relishing the moment, hands over his letter of resignation, which the boss declines to take. DeFrancesco drops it at his feet.

"I'm here to tell you that I'm quitting," DeFrancesco says with a smile.

And with that, the band kicks in, marching out of the hotel with stadium-like fanfare. DeFrancesco walks away with his hands aloft like a champion.

The Renaissance is a Marriott property that's operated by a franchisee, according to Jeff Flaherty, a Marriott spokesman. He says that the company is aware of the video, and he confirms that the hotel in the video is in fact the Renaissance. But he notes that the company couldn't comment on DeFrancesco's gripes since it doesn't actually run the hotel.

"It's certainly an interesting way for someone to choose to tender his resignation," Flaherty says.

DeFrancesco says that he worked at the hotel during a hard-fought unionization drive that he supported. According to news reports, workers at the Renaissance voted to join a union a little over a year and a half ago. The workers eventually became members of the service and hotel union UNITE HERE, but DeFrancesco stresses that he was acting on his own behalf and without union approval when he tendered his resignation.

One of the main reasons the workforce had decided to unionize was scheduling issues; they would sometimes get out late at night and have to return for the early-morning shift, just a few hours later. Yet while a lot of benefits came out of joining UNITE HERE -- most notably, raises -- DeFrancesco also says the union push was a bitter one that strained relations between management and rank-and-file workers. He claims that he lost many of the shifts he'd previously had, which is one reason he'd decided to part ways and capture it on video. The general manager at the Renaissance did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

DeFrancesco says he's been overwhelmed by the response to the video, which, as of this writing, has racked up more than a million YouTube views.

"I thought it would just embarrass the boss, but now it's all over the world and it's insane," he says. DeFrancesco says he's been contacted by various television news outlets -- and earlier this week he wound up being interviewed by a German newspaper about the state of American unions.

While some YouTube commenters have knocked him for his gall, the vast majority seem to applaud him for it, no doubt living vicariously through the moment.

Typical of the comments: "Joey is a hero to those who have wanted to quit like this but don't have the balls."

DeFrancesco partly attributes the response to the video to the dismal state of the economy. He believes that bosses of all kinds have been using the downturn as an excuse to expect more out of workers for less.

Those who are lucky enough to actually have jobs, he says, "are getting shit on so much, because people are using the recession to slash everything." The video exploded because "people have this fantasy of [quitting] like that."

DeFrancesco has already landed safely at another gig. Though he won't disclose where he's working, he says it's a job that lets him use his degree in history, which he earned from Rhode Island College while working at the hotel.

The most rewarding response to the video has come from his former co-workers, all of whom loved it, he says. One of them recently sent him a text message.

"You've had quite an effect on productivity at the hotel," it read.

Hubris came before the Times Atlas's fall

Greenland's ice sheet in full retreat? Most definitely, according to a press release from HarperCollins, eagerly touting the 2011 edition of its Times Comprehensive Atlas of the World. Before anyone could compare old and new versions of the "Canada and Greenland" plate, the firm announced that its cartographers "had to erase 15 per cent of Greenland's once-permanent ice cover". The culprit, of course, was climate change.

Climate scientists reacted quickly. They knew the claim was wrong and feared a further backlash from the "climategate" dust-up of late 2009, when hacked email accounts at the University of East Anglia in Norwich suggested that researchers were cherry-picking data to support dubious theories of global warming. In that case, close scrutiny of the emails indicated that it was the hackers, not the researchers, who were spinning the evidence.

So gun-shy atmospheric scientists and glaciologists were keen to pounce on an obvious cartographic misstatement that might reflect negatively on their efforts.

Journalists eagerly joined the fray and promptly dubbed it "Atlasgate". With all of the evidence on the scientists' side, Collins Geo ? the HarperCollins imprint responsible for the atlas ? offered a feeble explanation that smacked of finger-pointing. Its double-page reference map had been based on information from the US National Snow and Ice Data Center, Collins Geo said. The data centre quickly distanced itself from the project.

Apparently Collins Geo had misinterpreted the data, and this was used to compare the flawed map with an earlier counterpart from 1999 for the press statement that caused all the fuss. The National Snow and Ice Data Center, it became clear, would never have endorsed a 15?per cent shrinkage.

Mega-glitch

How does this kind of mega-glitch happen? An explanation lies partly in Collins Geo's apparent decision to produce the map in house. If that was the case, the firm might have avoided its embarrassment with the obvious quality-assurance step of sending page proofs to carefully chosen experts. Appropriate scientists seldom decline invitations to serve as reviewers.

Another explanation lies in the inherent persuasiveness of any map with a crisp appearance, a prestigious pedigree and the imprimatur of a large, well-known publishing house ? traits that not only confer clout in the cartographic marketplace but invite overconfidence and hubris. Clearly the Times Atlas enjoys the prestige of The Times newspaper as well as a long-standing association with the venerable John Bartholomew cartographic enterprise, a hallowed Edinburgh, UK, firm that HarperCollins acquired in the late 1980s.

It seems likely there was a belief that external review was unnecessary. Moreover, it seems that none of the publisher's marketing mavens compared their provocative God's-eye view with competing treatments on readily accessible scientific websites or Google Earth.

Hubris is not too strong a word to explain HarperCollins's predicament. A press release promising "concrete evidence of how climate change is altering the face of the planet forever" invites critical scrutiny by mainstream climate scientists as well as the self-proclaimed sceptics who are ever eager to pounce on overreaching pronouncements by the former. In Atlasgate, the pro-warming community, which outnumbers naysayers by perhaps 50 to 1, wasted no time in trashing the HarperCollins map. Sceptics never had an opportunity to cast themselves in their preferred role of the cautious challenger resisting a bloated, politically biased scientific establishment.

Small-scale, highly generalised topographic maps like those offering broad-brush coverage of fickle, fragile or seasonally variable features such as shallow inland seas and glaciers are a challenge for map authors striving for timeliness and accuracy. A New York Times blog about Atlasgate acknowledged that coastal ice can be particularly difficult to map on a broad scale because the ice margin is constantly dancing backward and forward. Even so, HarperCollins's claim that "15 per cent of the permanent ice cover? has melted away" can hardly be ascribed to the positional uncertainty of a low-resolution map.

Diplomatic minefield

Publishers of world atlases are leery of another capricious phenomenon: the thickets of geopolitical testiness and diplomacy. In the mid-1990s Microsoft Corporation committed a blunder when a new version of its operating system asked users to select a time zone by clicking on a tiny world map that violated India's take on its border with Pakistan. Quickly noticed by India's map police, the discrepancy precipitated a recall of 200,000 copies of Windows 95 ? all because eight out of 800,000 pixels were the wrong colour.

Place names can be equally touchy: South Korea strongly prefers "East Sea" to "Sea of Japan", and Iran has lobbied map publishers to hold the line against Saudi Arabia and its neighbours, who are anxious to replace "Persian Gulf" with "Arabian Gulf".

I have had first-hand experience of this cartographic pickiness. As one of three editors of the Perthes World Atlas, also marketed as the Cambridge World Atlas, I recently heard of a complaint that a colour scheme inspired by the Olympic rings perpetuated racist stereotypes. In selecting coloured backgrounds for index maps and lists of countries by continent, our designer had used yellow for Asia, brown for Africa and red for North America, while Europe ? with a long history of industrial pollution ? was coded green. A small matter, perhaps, but a clear warning that cartographic symbols and place names can be a minefield for unwary mapmakers.

In the Perthes example, five years passed before anyone complained. Would HarperCollins's glacial anomaly have been so widely condemned without the provocative press release? Most certainly not. Even so, map collectors might develop a fondness for the 2011 edition and its famously flawed plate. Like accidentally erroneous stamps and coins, the Atlasgate version offers a unique and intriguing story.
