If Cruz takes out Johnson, there?s a long line of contenders waiting for him

The storm is brewing down at 135 pounds. The veterans are probably jockeying for one final shot at Dominick Cruz, and then there's going to be an unfusion of young fighters in the next 18 months.

First Cruz has to successfully defend his title his this weekend against Demetrious Johnson at UFC on Versus 6. After that, who the heck knows.

Bloody Elbow did a nice job of listing some of the big fights upcoming in the bantamweight division. It looks like the winner of the UFC 139 fight between Urijah Faber and Brian Bowles will get the next shot at Cruz. Then there's these scheduled matchups:

Jeff Curran vs. Scott Jorgensen (UFC 137) - This is a big fight for Curran. The 34 year old veteran has fought everywhere - Pride, the UFC, WEC - and is 4-1 since leaving the WEC in 2009. A win here could move him right into title contention, largely because he would make a new name at the top. Jorgensen looked great in his last fight, and will hope for another spectacular finish here.

Brad Pickett vs. Renan Barao (UFC 139) - Pickett has been out this year due to injury, but he's on a great 10-1 run that includes his claim as the only man to defeat Demetrious Johnson. A Pickett win here and a Johnson win would give Pickett a strong argument for a title shot. As for Berao, he lost his MMA debut, but in the 27 fights and over 6 years since that debut, he's never been defeated again. That's an impressive run.

On this list of future contenders posted by Bloody Elbow, who has the best chance of getting in line after Faber or Bowles? Here's our take:

Joe Benavidez: It seems unlikely that he'd get a third shot at Cruz and he's got to be a shoo-in as one of the first fighters to challenge for the new UFC 125-pound title coming in 2012.

Michael McDonald: He's 20 and will be brought along slowly. That said, in the next 18 months he has a chance to be where 22-year-old Rory McDonald is in the welterweight division and Anthony Pettis, 24, is at lightweight.

Miguel Torres - It looks like Torres has a long road back to contender status. Once 36-1, the 30-year-old veteran has lost 3-of-5 and may be stuck in the role of fighting some young guns for the next year or so. Up next is 24-year-old Nick Pace at UFC 139.

Takeyu Mizugaki - The Japanese slugger looked better than ever in destroying Cole Escovedo at UFC 135, but if he can't win a big fight he'll be stuck in the No. 5-10 range for the foreseeable future. Mizugaki is 0-4 against Faber, Torres, Jorgensen and Bowles.

BE points out nicely that no one should overlook Season 14 of "The Ultimate Fighter" either. The winner and runner-up from the TUF 14 Finale could be throw right into the mix with the veterans. LightSquared?, a wholesale carrier building a nationwide wireless broadband network that will create consumer choice and industry innovation, has signed an agreement with Javad GNSS Inc. to develop a system that will eliminate related interference issues for high-precision GPS devices.

United pilots: New procedures put safety at risk

The union for pilots at United Airlines said new flying procedures set to begin on Friday threaten safety because they haven't had long enough to get used to them.

The union filed court papers asking a judge to delay the new procedures.

Commercial airline pilots precisely follow detailed directions for everything from who talks to air traffic control to who does what when something goes wrong. Pilots from two different airlines might follow different procedures even if they both fly the same kind of plane.

The issue came up at United because it is merging the ranks of United pilots with those who came from Continental.

Wendy Morse, the head of the pilot union at United and a 777 captain, said pilots watched a computer-based slide show that lasts 54 minutes, and that some pilots have been designated to answer questions from fellow aviators. But pilots have gotten no classroom instruction or other training in the new procedures, she said.

Changes include allowing the autopilot to fly the plane out of a severe wind gust rather than flying the plane manually as United pilots currently do, she said.

"I think United pilots will continue to be pretty uncomfortable allowing the autopilot to get out of a wind shear situation when they're close to the ground and about to hit it," she said.

Other changes include the terms that pilots use to update each other and air traffic controllers on their progress toward landing, and whether the captain or the first officer turns off the landing light after landing.

No single change would be difficult, she said, but "there's a whole plethora of changes in a row, and one on top of another, and that is what's creating the angst. Our guys are not comfortable because of a whole list of those kinds of things," she said.

Eighty percent of the procedures that will be used by the combined work group come from Continental, Morse said. Continental pilots, who belong to a separate unit inside the Air Line Pilots Association, were not involved in the court case.

Airline spokeswoman Julie King called the court filing "a shameful effort to influence negotiations for a joint collective bargaining agreement, under a false guise of safety." She said its training procedures are approved and monitored by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Morse said the filing has nothing to do with contract negotiations.

United and Continental pilots still have separate union contracts. They have been negotiating for a joint contract with parent company United Continental Holdings Inc.

The company is aiming to get a single operating certificate from the FAA by the end of the year, and harmonizing flying procedures is one part of that. The two companies merged last year.

Freed hikers: Iran held us because we're American (AP)

NEW YORK ? Two American hikers held for years in an Iranian prison came home Sunday, declaring that they were detained because of their nationality, not because they might have crossed the border from Iraq.

Joshua Fattal and Shane Bauer arrived in New York on Sunday morning, ending their diplomatic and personal ordeal with a sharp rebuke of the country that sentenced each to eight years in jail for espionage and illegally walking into Iran. They say they may never know if they actually stepped across the border while hiking and getting lost.

"From the very start, the only reason we have been held hostage is because we are American," Fattal said at a news conference at a Manhattan hotel. "Iran has always tied our case to its political disputes with the U.S."

The two 29-year-olds were freed last week under a $1 million bail deal and arrived Wednesday in Oman, greeted by relatives and fellow hiker Sarah Shourd, who was released last year.

The men's families said Sunday they don't know who paid the bail.

The men's saga began in July 2009 with what they called a wrong turn into the wrong country. The three say they were hiking together in Iraq's relatively peaceful Kurdish region along the Iran-Iraq border when Iranian guards detained them. They always maintained their innocence, saying they might have accidentally wandered into Iran.

The two men were convicted of spying last month. Shourd, to whom Bauer proposed marriage while they were imprisoned, was charged but freed last year before any trial.

A beaming Shourd faced reporters and cameras that packed a conference room at the Parker Meridien hotel.

"There's a huge burden lifted off of all of our chests ? so much joy," she said. "Shane and Josh and I are beginning our lives again, and there are so many new joys that await us; I've never felt as free as I feel today."

But her face darkened when she was asked whether the men had been mistreated in captivity. She said Bauer was beaten and Fattal forced down a flight of stairs.

The men took turns reading statements, surrounded by relatives and Shourd. They didn't take questions from reporters.

Fattal said he wanted to make clear that while he and Bauer "applaud Iranian authorities for finally making the right decision," they "do not deserve undue credit for ending what they had no right and no justification to start in the first place."

The two countries severed diplomatic ties three decades ago during the hostage crisis. Since then, both have tried to limit the other's influence in the Middle East, and the United States and other Western nations see Iran as the greatest nuclear threat in the region.

The hikers' detention, Bauer said, was "never about crossing the unmarked border between Iran and Iraq. We were held because of our nationality."

He said they don't know whether they had even crossed into Iran: "We will probably never know."

The irony of it all, Bauer said, "is that Sarah, Josh and I oppose U.S. policies towards Iran which perpetuate this hostility."

The two also detailed the difficult conditions in the Tehran prison where they were held in near-isolation.

"Many times, too many times, we heard the screams of other prisoners being beaten and there was nothing we could do to help them," Fattal said.

Added Bauer: "How can we forgive the Iranian government when it continues to imprison so many other innocent people and prisoners of conscience?"

They said their phone calls with family members amounted to a total of 15 minutes in two years, and they had to go on repeated hunger strikes to receive letters. Eventually, they were told ? falsely ? that their families had stopped writing them letters.

"Solitary confinement was the worst experience of all of our lives," Fattal said. "We lived in a world of lies and false hope."

They kept in shape physically and mentally by lifting water bottles, discussing books and asking each other questions, family members said. And they ripped slivers of cloth from prison blindfolds to secure their footwear so they could run for exercise.

The two managed to hold on to reality by reading letters from family members that included news of what was happening in the world, Bauer's mother, Cindy Hickey, told The Associated Press.

Fattal said their release last week came as a total surprise.

On Wednesday, he said, they had just finished their brief daily open-air exercise and expected, as on other days, to be blindfolded and led back to their 8- by-13-foot cell.

Instead, the prison guards took them downstairs, fingerprinted them and gave them civilian clothes. They weren't told where they were going.

The guards then led them to another part of the prison, where they met a diplomatic envoy from Oman.

His first words to them: "Let's go home."

Hours later, the gates of Tehran's Evin prison opened and the Americans were driven to the airport, then flown to Oman.

The days following their sudden release, Fattal said, made for "the most incredible experience of our lives."

Shourd was with the families to greet the two on the tarmac at a royal airfield near the airport in Oman's capital, Muscat. At about 20 minutes before midnight Wednesday, Fattal and Bauer, wearing jeans and casual shirts, bounded down the steps from the blue-and-white plane. The men appeared very thin and pale, but in good health.

The first hint of change in the case came last week when Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Fattal and Bauer could be released within days. But wrangling from within the country's leadership delayed efforts. Finally, Iranian defense attorney Masoud Shafiei secured the necessary judicial approval Wednesday for the bail ? $500,000 for each man.

Iran's Foreign Ministry called their release a gesture of Islamic mercy.

Until their release, the last direct contact family members had with Bauer and Fattal was in May 2010, when their mothers were permitted a short visit in Tehran, which Iranian officials used for high-profile propaganda.

Since her release, Shourd has lived in Oakland, Calif. Bauer, a freelance journalist, grew up in Onamia, Minn., and Fattal, an environmental activist, is from Elkins Park, Pa., a Philadelphia suburb.

Bauer and Shourd were living in Damascus, Syria, when Fattal came to visit and the three went hiking.

On Sunday, the men's families told reporters that they hadn't made plans for what they would do next ? except for carving out some private time together. They would not say where they were sleeping on Sunday night.

Upload speeds on the LTE network are also significantly higher than on regular "4G," clocking in at 2 megabits to 5 megabits per second, Rinne said. That's fast enough to send one minute of high-definition video from a tablet to Facebook in three minutes.

The LTE-capable devices AT&T sells are a tablet ? the HTC Jetstream ? two USB data sticks and a "mobile Wi-Fi hotspot." They're sold with the standard AT&T non-phone data plan, which provides 5 gigabytes of data for $50 per month, except for the tablet, which comes with a $35 plan with 3 gigabytes of data.

At top LTE download speeds, it takes about an hour to exhaust the monthly allotment of 5 gigabytes. Like Verizon, AT&T charges $10 per gigabyte used above that.

Rinne said the company will have an LTE-capable phone by the end of the year.

AT&T says it originally planned to build out LTE to cover 80 percent of the U.S. population, but if regulators let it buy T-Mobile, it will upgrade cell sites in rural areas as well, to cover 97 percent of the population. AT&T has less radio spectrum available for LTE than Verizon does, so it wants to take some of the spectrum T-Mobile uses for 3G and convert it to LTE.

The initial five LTE cities are all areas in which AT&T is the landline phone company. That makes it easier for the company to provide the LTE-enabled cell towers with high-speed wired connections to the Internet. The company's headquarters is in Dallas, one of the launch cities.

"He's so devastated there's not a goal other than trying to figure out what is going on at this time," Silek said of Tareq. "If there's an opportunity for reconciliation, that's something they can and ought to explore."

Calls to Silek and to Journey's agent were not immediately returned. An Associated Press call to a number for Tareq prompted a recorded message that the line could not accept additional calls.

McEathron said the sheriff's department had investigated complaints from the couple about comments they found threatening posted on Facebook "for quite a while now," but that they hadn't found any viable threats.

"Some of it is maybe that the person didn't really threaten them but they took it as a threat," he said.

But McEathron said deputies weren't concerned that the threats had led to a kidnapping because they were able to talk to Michaele Salahi within minutes of her husband's report and determine that she was unharmed.
