Attorney Nick Halbur visited Walnut Grove Retirement Community on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011 to speak about his work as an Elder Law attorney.? He spoke about?legal solutions for confronting incapacity and dementia,?such as Power of Attorney documents, Guardianships, and Conservatorships.? He also discussed a number of long term care issues including Medicare and Medicaid coverage of nursing home stays and community based services.? On the topic of Medicaid, Nick summarized key gifting and spousal impoverishment rules that lawyers can assist clients with if they may need coverage of long term care.? Estate planning, trusts, and probate are also important legal services that an Elder Law attorney can provide.? The retirees of Walnut Creek were having a wild west theme day with?most of them wearing a?cowboy hat or other fun costume.? They?insisted on getting?Nick?s picture in his suit and a hat on, along with Attorney Ben Thompson, who also attended the talk?with Nick to see the Community and help field questions from the retirees.

An important theme of the talk and the Q&A time that followed was the importance of planning for future needs for long term care or incapacity.? The retirees asked about a number of important issues that confront seniors including the handling of loans to children, the financial responsibilities of spouses for eachothers bills, and the question of who is in charge once a power of attorney is signed (it?s the one who signs it, the senior/principal is the boss).
