US wants 2012 talks for Taliban political office

(AP) ? The Obama administration hopes to restore momentum in the spring to U.S. talks with the Taliban insurgency that had reached a critical point before falling apart this month because of objections from Afghan President Hamid Karzai, U.S. and Afghan officials said.

One goal of renewed talks with the insurgents would be to identify cease-fire zones that could be used as a steppingstone toward a full peace agreement that stops most fighting, a senior administration official told The Associated Press ? a goal that remains far out of reach.

U.S. officials from the State Department and White House plan to continue a series of secret meetings with Taliban representatives in Europe and the Persian Gulf region next year, assuming a small group of Taliban emissaries the U.S. considers legitimate remains willing, two officials said.

The U.S. officials spoke on condition of anonymity to describe the sensitive and precarious U.S. outreach to the Taliban leadership.

The U.S. outreach to the Taliban this year had fits and starts but had progressed to the point that there was active discussion of two steps the Taliban seeks as precursors to negotiations, the senior U.S. official said. Talks are on an unofficial hiatus at Karzai's request, U.S. and other officials said.

Those trust-building measures were a Taliban headquarters office and the release from the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, of about five Afghan prisoners considered affiliated with the Taliban. Those steps were to be matched by assurances from at least part of the Taliban leadership that the insurgents would cut ties with al-Qaida, accept the elected civilian government of Afghanistan and bargain in good faith.

The Taliban office idea is seen the most likely to regain traction next year, but it's unclear when it might open. A political office in a neutral third country would be authorized to conduct talks on a peaceful end to the 10-year war.

Karzai remains opposed to the more difficult prisoner transfer plan, which is further complicated by new congressional restrictions on any prisoner transfers.

The U.S. tentatively had agreed to transfer a handful of Afghan prisoners to house arrest in a third country, probably Qatar, before the deal unraveled, U.S. officials said.

The Associated Press has learned the identity of some of the proposed transferees, including Khairullah Khairkhwa, former Taliban governor of Herat, and Mullah Mohammed Fazl, a former top Taliban military commander believed responsible for sectarian killings before the U.S. invasion that toppled the Taliban government in Afghanistan in 2001.

Karzai's own advisers seeking peace with the Taliban had named those men among several Afghan Taliban prisoners it wanted released from Guantanamo as a goodwill gesture, but Karzai wants the prisoners to come to Afghanistan, not a third country, a senior Afghan official in the region said.

Sending Afghans to an Arab country could offend Afghans' sense of sovereignty and suggest that the U.S. does not think Afghanistan is fit to hold or try the men, officials said.

"As soon as I was released, I met President Karzai and he promised that he would not allow Afghan prisoners to be sent anywhere except Afghanistan," said Haji Ruhollah, an Afghan who was released from Guantanamo in 2010. "They are all Afghans and they should be brought and kept in Afghanistan."

U.S. and Afghan officials also pointed to Karzai's longstanding unease with what he sees as a rush by the U.S. to broker deals ahead of the planned exit of U.S. combat forces by 2015. Karzai has political problems at home, including newly resurgent militias, and the assassination of his chief peace negotiator in September clouds his own outreach to the Taliban.

The U.S. once swore off direct talks with the Taliban until the insurgents essentially were beaten but shifted position as the war dragged on in near stalemate. Participants said they still consider a peace deal a long shot, and the insurgent leadership has shown no sign it wants to stop fighting a guerrilla war it thinks it can sustain until after most foreign forces depart.

The Associated Press is not identifying U.S. officials involved in the direct talks in consideration of their safety. One member of the Taliban negotiating team has been publicly identified as Tayyab Aga, an emissary of Pakistan-based Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar. Other participants include a former Taliban ambassador to Saudi Arabia and a former Taliban deputy health minister, the senior Afghan official said.

The U.S. goal is to midwife talks between the insurgents and the U.S.-backed Afghan government led by Karzai, who frequently has felt sidelined by the U.S. as it pursues talks with his enemies. He bills peace talks as an Afghan-led process, which the U.S. insists is also its goal. The U.S. outreach is meant to jump-start negotiations, U.S. officials have said, but they acknowledge that their efforts can feed the perception that Karzai is not fully in charge.

Although the Karzai government shares the goal of outreach and eventual political reconciliation with the Afghan Taliban movement, he resents the insurgents' demand only to speak with what they call American occupiers. He has argued that the U.S. undercuts his leverage, and his inner circle derailed initial U.S.-Taliban talks earlier this year, several officials previously told the AP.

Karzai has supported the general idea of an office, preferably in Afghanistan, but he balked when the plan for Qatar appeared to have been settled without him, officials said. Earlier this month, Kabul recalled its ambassador to Qatar for consultations over reports that the Taliban was planning to open an office there.

An Afghan official, who could not be identified because of the sensitivity of the issue, said at the time that the ambassador was recalled because Qatar had not consulted with them throughout the process. The Afghan government supports the establishment of an office for the Taliban only as a facilitative step in the peace process, not as any kind of a concession to them, the official said.

On Tuesday, Karzai backed down. He said his government would accept the Qatar office to hold peace talks, although Saudi Arabia or Turkey would be preferable venues.

If the United States insists that the insurgents establish a liaison office in Qatar, "we are agreed," Karzai said in a presidential statement.

Karzai's preference for Saudi Arabia or Turkey over Qatar is based on his belief that the Saudis can be trusted and their status as an established Muslim power broker, the senior Afghan official said. Turkey is a neighbor of Afghanistan and already involved in international efforts to stabilize the country.

Karzai and his inner circle think the tiny gas-rich Arab state of Qatar is not a strong Muslim country and is not particularly close to Afghanistan, the official said.

(AP Photo/Richard Drew, File)

(AP) ? Stocks weakened Wednesday, ending a five-day advance in the S&P 500 index, as new signs of strain emerged in the European banking system. The euro fell to its lowest level against the dollar in nearly a year and Treasurys rallied.

The Dow Jones industrial average lost nearly 140 points. The S&P is now negative for the year again, after barely turning positive on Friday.

The European Central Bank said banks had parked $590.72 billion with it overnight, surpassing the record set only Monday. That means European banks were less willing to take the risk of making short-term loans to each other, opting instead to earn low interest rates from the ECB. The disclosure also hurt the euro, which fell to $1.291, its lowest level against the dollar since January.

The worrying news from the ECB overshadowed two successful auctions of Italian government debt. Italy was able to pay much lower borrowing rates than last month. The strong demand from investors raised hopes that Italy would be able to avoid sinking into a financial crisis, as smaller countries like Greece and Portugal have.

John Merrill, chief investment officer at Tanglewood Wealth Management, said markets would remain vulnerable to flare-ups in Europe's long-running financial crisis until leaders there come up with more convincing solutions for paying down their enormous debt loads and keeping the 17-nation currency union intact.

"We live in a Band-Aid world," Merrill said. "Nobody really is addressing underlying issues."

European leaders agreed at a summit Dec. 9 to forge closer fiscal ties over the long term, but investors are still worried that Greece might default on its debt or be forced to leave the euro bloc. A Greek exit from the currency union would likely cause huge disruptions for the country's economy and losses for European banks that hold Greek government debt. Investors fear that could cascade into another global financial panic, as happened in 2008 following the collapse of the U.S. investment bank Lehman Brothers.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 139.94 points, or 1.1 percent, to 12,151.41. Materials and energy companies led the declines. Alcoa Inc. fell 3 percent and Caterpillar Inc. fell 2.4 percent.

With only two more trading days left in the year, markets were thinly populated in a holiday-shortened week. Shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange totaled 2.3 billion, less than half of the usual volume.

The S&P 500 fell 15.79 points, or 1.3 percent, to 1,249.64. The Nasdaq composite declined 35.22 points, or 1.3 percent, to 2,589.98.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.93 percent from 2 percent late Tuesday as investors moved money into less risky assets.

The Bank of Italy raised $11.8 billion in two bond auctions, reflecting investor approval of the country's recently passed austerity measures. The yield on Italy's six-month bill offering was half the interest rate the country paid in a similar auction last month. The yield on the country's 10-year bond remained dangerously high, however, at 6.93 percent. It had risen to 7 percent Tuesday, a level that is considered unsustainable.

Italy is the euro zone's third-largest economy and is considered too big to save under the euro zone's current bailout funds. Investors have grown fearful over the past few months that Italy will find it difficult to pay off its massive debts, which stand at around $2.5 trillion.

The worries were reflected in U.S. bank stocks. Bank of America Corp. fell 3.5 percent, while Regions Financial Corp. fell 2.7 percent.

In other corporate news:

? Sandridge Energy Inc. stock declined 4.4 percent on news that it is selling drilling rights in two states to a Spanish energy company, Repsol YPF.

? Cavium Inc. fell over 1 percent, a day after the chipmaker said its fourth-quarter results will fall below its previous forecast.

Mexican army: Ally's arrest is blow to 'El Chapo' (AP)

MEXICO CITY ? Mexican authorities said Monday that they had dealt a blow to the country's most powerful drug cartel with the capture of a top lieutenant ? but didn't say if they were any closer to capturing the gang's elusive leader.

Felipe Cabrera Sarabia, known as "The Engineer," allegedly ran operations for the Sinaloa drug cartel, Mexico's most powerful, in the northern state of Durango and in part of the northern state of Chihuahua, Chief Army spokesman Gen. Ricardo Trevilla told a news conference. Cabrera, wearing a bulletproof vest, was paraded before the news media in what has become a common practice for law enforcement authorities following major arrests.

Many experts and law-enforcement officials believe the reputed leader of the Sinaloa cartel, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, has been hiding in the mountains of Durango. Authorities say Guzman is Mexico's top drug lord, while Forbes magazine has included him on its list of the world's richest men, reportedly worth more than $1 billion. He has eluded authorities since his 2001 escape from prison in a laundry truck, and has a $7 million bounty on his head.

Trevilla offered no information about the hunt for Guzman. He only said that Cabrera's capture "will affect the structure and leadership of the Sinaloa cartel."

At the time of Cabrera's arrest, army special forces also seized documents and computer equipment, he said.

Cabrera was nabbed without a shot being fired Friday in the capital of Sinaloa state, headquarters of the cartel, army officials first announced Sunday night.

He will be held for at least 40 days on suspicion of participating in organized crime and drug trafficking. Mexican law allows organized-crime suspects to be held that long before prosecutors bring formal charges before a judge.

Trevilla said Cabrera and three of his brothers began as marijuana growers and that Cabrera rose through the Sinaloa ranks by using violence against his rivals.

In recent months, Cabrera waged war against a rival faction of the Sinaloa cartel known as the "Ms", leading to a surge in violence around Durango, he said.

Federal forces have found 14 mass graves containing 287 bodies in Durango state since April.

Separately, Mexican authorities said they had seized 21 metric tons of precursor chemicals used to make methamphetamine from a boat that stopped in the port of Manzanillo on the way from Peru to Guatemala.

It was the fourth large seizure this month of precursor chemicals headed for Guatemala.

It brings to more than 555 tons the amount of meth chemicals detected at Mexican ports in less than a month.

Authorities announced on Dec. 19 that they had found almost 100 metric tons of methylamine at the port of Lazaro Cardenas, and earlier said that 205 tons of the chemical had been found there over several days in early December. Mexico said Friday that it seized 229 metric tons of precursor chemicals at the port.

Experts familiar with meth production call it a huge amount of raw material, noting that under some production methods, precursor chemicals can yield about half their weight in uncut meth.

LogMeIn remote desktop app goes free on iPhone and iPad

Looks like LogMeIn Inc. has suddenly cottoned on to the freemium business model, deciding to offer its basic remote desktop app for iPhone and iPad entirely gratis. Previously, you had to hand over $29.99 for the simple pleasure of accessing your PC and Mac desktops via LogMeIn Ignition, but the new free version (simply 'LogMeIn') amply provides for that barebones service, while bells and whistles are reserved for those who buy an in-app subscription to LogMeIn Pro at $40 per year -- including things like HD video and sound streaming, file transferring and integration with cloud storage services . Confusing matters slightly, the old Ignition app won't die. It'll live on in the App Store with a massively inflated price to support old Ignition customers and -- most importantly -- give them grandfather rights to Pro features, so they don't feel left out and start sniffing around the competition. There's a full PR after the break, and it also mentions that Android update is on its way in 2012.

McNeil: Time to adopt another NFL team

A little more than half of those who responded to a Tribune online survey early this week said they were planning to take a pass on the Bears-Packers game Sunday night at Lambeau Field.

Bears enthusiasts had every right to a knee-jerk, flip-the-bird reaction to Team McCaskey after Week 15's uninspired second half against Seattle, culminating in the Bears' fourth straight loss to an average opponent.

But when the ball goes in the air, I'm betting most of those who vowed abstinence will be right back in the armchair to soak in the commencement of the Josh McCown Era. Merry Christmas.

In the interim, there should be gratitude for the palate-cleansing performances of the Bulls and Blackhawks this week. Much need diversions and both teams offer such a refreshingly stark contrast to the beloved Bears in terms of which way the arrow is pointing.

Rip Hamilton's debut was a smashing success and Derrick Rose's contract extension and news conference Wednesday was the feel-good moment of the month. The Hawks treated a lively crowd to a 5-1 thrashing of the Canadiens later that night, an encore to perhaps their best period of the year when they swarmed the Penguins in the third in a 3-2 loss.

The United Center's roommates provided pleasant departures when we needed them. Thanks.

We are who we are, however. This is a football town. Pro football.

So with the Bears spectating like the rest of us during the postseason, it's time to play adopt-a-team. Here are a few suggestions:

The 49ers

These aren't your daddy's Niners. They run it first and throw it when they need to. It's taken Alex Smith forever to get there, but he's a much better quarterback under Jim Harbaugh's direction. Frank Gore is a bonafide "load back," a position these days on the endangered species list.

The 49ers defense was impenetrable and relentless in Monday's 20-3 evisceration of Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers. En route to 11-3, San Francisco's defense has yet to allow a rushing touchdown. That's amazing.

I love the way the 49ers play, but I wrestle with rooting for the still-too-jockular head coach. Harbaugh gets my vote for coach of the year, but he remains a flaky, petulant meathead.

The Texans

The are this year's Packers in terms of surviving an overcrowded treatment room. The Texans' challenges, however, are more daunting than Green Bay's were a year ago because Aaron Rodgers wasn't hurt. Quite the opposite, actually.

Without Matt Schaub, Houston ? making its first playoff appearance in franchise history ? is pressing on with third-stringer T.J. Yates, a rookie from North Carolina.

Yates is the anti-Caleb Hanie.

In three starts, the rookie kicks four-year backup Hanie's butt. Yates has thrown only three interceptions to Hanie's nine. I think Yates is suspect in January, but a pat on the back to him for not beating his team. He won a game heroically two weeks ago in Cincinnati. Yates' rating is a serviceable 75.5 and all while wide receiver Andre Johnson, one of the best players in the NFL, has been shelved with a hamstring issue.

Defensively, first-year coordinator Wade Phillips has transformed bottom feeders into upper echelon. I always kind of thought Phillips was a boob, but the likable kind so I'm happy for him.

The Saints

If you're the "Anybody but the Packers" type, this is your team. The big question: Can a dome team like the Saints get out of Lambeau with a win on a cold, windy day in late-January?

Yeah, it's doable. You think Saints and you think Drew Brees, but New Orleans has assembled the best committee of running backs in the league. One of them is Pierre Thomas, who grew up in Lansing, played at T.F. South and for the Fighting Illini.

I'm a sucker for seeing "our own" do cool things. I always have loved Lansing. Thomas has been one of the more underrated players in the league for a couple seasons now.

The head coach also is a local-boy-made-good. Sean Payton is the pride of Naperville, the only Napervillian to guide an NFL team to a Super Bowl victory. He played at Eastern Illinois, the College of Coaches.

The Saints are going to be my team. Brees always has appeared to be genuine. I loved him at Purdue and I admire how well he's handled his enormous success. Met Payton during Super Bowl XL week in Detroit and he struck me as among the most "normal" men of his craft I'd met.

Meanwhile, it's the storied rivalry of Chicago and Green Bay with a fresh renewal, all by itself on Christmas night. Bring on McCown.

While "It's A Wonderful Life" sits on stand-by, ready to spare us another nightmarish second half.

'Facebook' top search term (again) for 2011

Nicholas Kamm / AFP - Getty Images

By Suzanne Choney

For the third straight year, "Facebook" was the top searched term in the U.S., followed by "youtube" and "Facebook login." Why, do you ask, would those be searched for, rather than websites visited?

Well, we're lazy, for one thing. "Navigational searches dominated the top search results as users typed in terms versus typing in the URL in the browser bar," said Simon Bradstock, general manager of Experian Hitwise, in a press release about the firm's findings.

"When combined, common search terms for Facebook ? e.g., facebook and facebook.com ? accounted for 3.48 percent of all searches in the United States among the top 50 terms, which represents a 33 percent increase compared with 2010," Experian Hitwise said. "YouTube terms accounted for 1.36 percent, representing a 21 percent increase compared with 2010. Google terms (including YouTube) accounted for 1.59 percent ? an increase of 27 percent compared with 2010. Yahoo terms accounted for 0.59 percent? an increase of 15 percent compared with 2010."

Among the new terms that entered the "top? 50" search terms for the year: addicting games, amazon.com, chase online, cnn, face, facebook sign-up, pandora and twitter.

Here are some of Experian Hitwise's other lists for 2011:

Top-visited websites: Dingdingding: Yes, Facebook again, and for the second year, with 10.29 percent of all U.S. visits between January and November. That's a 15 percent increase over 2010. Google.com was second, with 7.70 percent of visits, then YouTube (3.17 percent), Yahoo! Mail (2.95 percent) and Yahoo! (2.47 percent).

Top public figure searches: Oooh 'Baby': Justin Bieber was No. 1, followed by Casey Anthony, Kim Kardashian, Nicki Minaj, Selena Gomez and Charlie Sheen.

Top personalities searches (from sites focused on celebrities and stars): "Wedding bell blues" for Kim?"follow your heart" Kardashian, then Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and Robert Pattinson.

Top searched for music artists/bands: We were "gaga" for Lady Gaga, then Justin Beiber, Beyonce, Taylor Swift and Chris Brown.

Top TV show searches: We worshipped "American Idol, followed by "The Young and the Restless," "Dora the Explorer, "Dancing with the Stars" and "Days of Our Lives."

Yes, those were the days of our lives, via search, in 2011.

Auburn (SID): South Florida vs. Auburn Postgame Quotes

Dec. 14, 2011

Recap?|? Box Score?|? Photo Gallery?

Auburn Locker Room

Head Coach Tony Barbee

On responding after the 11-day layoff...
"When you are off for so many days, you lose that game sharpness. I liked the way we responded. We didn't let our lack of offense in the first 10 minutes bury us. We still guarded and rebounded. We kept them off the offensive glass, and they are a great offensive rebounding team. It gave us a chance. When we did find some offense, we weren't that far behind. I am proud of the guys for the way they responded. We have had some tough practices after some time off. What we worked on during that time we had off came into play tonight. You know I want to play a fast paced game with this team. I want to score 80 points a night, but that isn't always going to happen. You have to win what I call a `grind out' game, and tonight was one of those. I'm proud of the way we defended, holding them to just 33 percent. I'm proud of the way we blocked them out, because we really worked on it. I am proud of the fact that guys responded. They made free throws, made plays and made shots when we needed them."

On stopping South Florida's Augustus Gilchrist...
"He is a good player. We didn't do anything different in the second half than we did in the first half. We got to him a little earlier with our pressure, so he couldn't get that quick turnaround jumper that he was making in the first half. It wasn't like he was hurting us by getting those 10 quick points in post ups. He got most of them off of the jump shots. When the pace picked up, it looked like he got a little bit tired. When he got tired, it looked like he got a little bit ineffective. I am just proud of the way the guys defended. That was the key to this game. We have to be a team, until we get healthy and get all of our bodies, that really defends and rebounds. It has to be a group effort, because we don't have a Dennis Rodman-type player who will go out there and get 20 rebounds a game. You look across the box score and Kenny (Gabriel) has eight, Rob (Chubb) has six, Varez (Ward) with six, Frankie (Sullivan) with four and Adrian (Forbes) with three. How about Adrian Forbes tonight? He really helped us out tonight. We are going to need him, especially when we play those bigger teams like we faced tonight."

On Frankie Sullivan and Varez Ward not starting...
"They have been hurt and not practicing. They probably practiced the last two days before this game, and we had 13 days off. Since they didn't practice, the guys that did earned the right to start. It was nothing more than that. They are not at 100 percent. Frankie gets sore from time to time."

On Chris Denson's play...
"Chris played well. He did a lot of good things tonight. He shot 5-of-9 tonight and didn't turn the ball over. He also got three assists and three rebounds, but more than anything, it was his presence on the floor. Defensively, it looked like he was all over the place tonight. He was guarding his man, helping out and rotating. As he becomes a complete player, he is on the floor for more time where he can show his true strength, scoring the ball."

On Kenny Gabriel's play...
"He had an overall game. We need more from him offensively, and he's capable of it. He had opportunities to get it tonight, in the post and on the perimeter. He needs to get his confidence going. That is probably the biggest issue with him. Even though his offense wasn't there tonight, he didn't let that affect him defensively. I am happy for Kenny."

Chris Denson, So., G

On tonight's game after the long break...
"I think the layoff was pretty good for us. As you see, our defense wasn't up to par. We held this team to a low scoring game. All week we just focused on defense, and we just have to get better on the offensive end. That's what our main focus is on right now. I think we have the defense down pat, but I think the layoff helped us a lot in that category."

On defense being an area of focus for him...
"Yes, that's a big focus for me. Coach (Tony Barbee) says all the time I don't have the intensity on defense like I do on offense. He said I'm so aggressive on offense, I need to be aggressive on defense, so that's a big focus for me. I'm still working on it."

On adjusting to a half-court game tempo instead of a transition game...
"Like Coach always says, `Get what you can, and get what the defense gives you.' We have a whole bunch of scorers on our team. We don't have any selfish guys. Everybody has a different type of game. Mine is the up and down. Frankie (Sullivan) is the shooter. Josh (Wallace) is the point guard of the offense. It's just part of the game. Everybody has to get their shots how they can. For instance, they played a lot of zone. We usually don't do good against zone defense, but we overcame that tonight."

On the difference in the defense performance tonight against the Seton Hall game...
"Against Seton Hall, I think we were just too timid. Being back home, we feel at home. We were hyped up from the loss. We came back home and in the locker room before the game, it just felt way different than in the locker room at Seton Hall. The intensity was just there."

South Florida Locker Room

Head Coach Stan Heath

Opening statement ...
"It was a very frustrating night. We couldn't pick and roll, we couldn't find the basket and we just couldn't score. We had good looks at times, but they were blocked or we threw it away and we had open looks that we didn't finish. At times I was impressed with our defense, but we missed marking some guys at times."

On fast start for USF ...
"It looked like we were ready to go. We came out of the gate strong. I was excited because I thought that we had some fire power coming into this game with Ron Anderson and Victor Rudd, but neither guy performed the way that they can. I thought they could have been a lot more aggressive."

On Victor Rudd and team scoring ...
"I think he defines himself as a pure shooter, but at times it seems like he has nothing else to fall back on. I think he can do more, but at the same time, when you're 6-foot-8 and can't rebound then something's wrong. If no one else picks up the slack then you're going to fall behind. I think we needed someone else to step up. I thought Augustus Ghilchrist had a terrific first half, but we were searching for a second or third option and we never found that alternative guy to help move the offense."

Hugh Robertson, Sr., G

On thoughts of the game...
" We just didn't give a lot of effort."On what he learned from tonight's loss that will get him ready for his next opponent...."We just got to come in and play hard."

On Auburn playing its best defensive game since 2008....
"We have to go back to the gym and get our weight up, and hopefully play more aggressive next time."

Augustus Gilchrist, Sr., F

On thoughts of the game...
" I think we came out pretty strong in the beginning of the game. We lost focus. We tied again in the second half. We knew we had to pick up the intensity, but they got a couple of easy buckets to start off the half and they ran away with it."

On Auburn playing its best defensive game since 2008, what will you do to get ready for your next game?....
" Go back and watch tape, learn from it and execute better."

On leading team in scoring tonight...
"That's not important for me. We lost tonight. We have to come together and get some wins."

Obama a fan of "Boardwalk Empire," "Homeland"

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama says he's a fan of two popular cable TV shows: HBO's "Boardwalk Empire" and Showtime's "Homeland."

First lady Michelle Obama and their daughters, 13-year-old Malia and 10-year-old Sasha, enjoy watching ABC's "Modern Family."

The president and first lady Michelle Obama talked to People Magazine about life in the White House, from Facebook and helping their daughters with classroom assignments to their favorite TV shows and reading habits. Mrs. Obama says their daughters are "settled, they're healthy, (and) thriving."

Asked about favorite TV shows, Mrs. Obama said, "For the girls and me, "Modern Family," that's our favorite show." The comedy is about three related Los Angeles-area families.

The president said, "I'm a little darker," telling the magazine that he enjoys "Boardwalk Empire," a drama depicting Prohibition-era Atlantic City, and "Homeland," a psychological thriller about a CIA officer trying to unravel a suspected terrorist plot.

Michelle Obama says her husband has urged Malia to read the classics, so she's reading John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath," and F. Scott Fitzgerald's "Tender Is the Night." Mrs. Obama says Toni Morrison's "Song of Solomon" is her favorite book, and "I'm interested in hearing how she interprets it."

The president said he doesn't let his daughters on Facebook. He said they told him, "Why would we want to have a whole bunch of people who we don't know knowing our business?"

The first couple said their daughters don't need much help with school work anymore and are "remarkably self-sufficient." The president said sometimes Malia asks for help with a list of 75 vocabulary words. "She'll say, "Read them to me, and I'm going to write them out so that I can spell them right." Mrs. Obama jokes, "That's excruciating."

In 2008, Obama promised his daughters a dog and his wife a date night after the election. This time, "they basically have a blank check. Whatever she demands, she will get."

Young star rebels against its parent cloud

ScienceDaily (Dec. 15, 2011) ? Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 has captured this image of a giant cloud of hydrogen gas illuminated by a bright young star. The image shows how violent the end stages of the star-formation process can be, with the young object shaking up its stellar nursery.

Despite the celestial colours of this picture, there is nothing peaceful about star forming region Sh 2-106, or S106 for short. A devilish young star, named S106 IR, lies in it and ejects material at high speed, which disrupts the gas and dust around it. The star has a mass about 15 times that of the Sun and is in the final stages of its formation. It will soon quieten down by entering the main sequence, the adult stage of stellar life.

For now, S106 IR remains embedded in its parent cloud, but it is rebelling against it. The material spewing off the star not only gives the cloud its hourglass shape but also makes the hydrogen gas in it very hot and turbulent. The resulting intricate patterns are clearly visible in this Hubble image.

The young star also heats up the surrounding gas, making it reach temperatures of 10,000 degrees Celsius. The star's radiation ionises the hydrogen lobes, making them glow. The light from this glowing gas is coloured blue in this image.

Separating these regions of glowing gas is a cooler, thick lane of dust, appearing red in the image. This dark material almost completely hides the ionising star from view, but the young object can still be seen peeking through the widest part of the dust lane.

S106 was the 106th object to be catalogued by the astronomer Stewart Sharpless in the 1950s. It is a few thousand light-years distant in the direction of Cygnus (The Swan). The cloud itself is relatively small by the standards of star-forming regions, around 2 light-years along its longest axis. This is about half the distance between the Sun and Proxima Centauri, our nearest stellar neighbour.

This composite picture was obtained with the Wide Field Camera 3 on the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. It results from the combination of two images taken in infrared light and one which is tuned to a specific wavelength of visible light emitted by excited hydrogen gas, known as H-alpha. This choice of wavelengths is ideal for targetting star-forming regions. The H-alpha filter isolates the light emitted from hydrogen in gas clouds while the infrared light can shine through the dust that often obscures these regions.
